We’re a pretty Green family: we have a recycle bin, we have a compost bin, we grow our own veg, we have solar panels to heat our water and we have a 5500l water tank. Which brings me to the subject of our water bill. It’s ridiculous!
With the drought in Victoria, we have a scheme called Target155. Basically, local government has set a target of 155l of water per person per day. Or water bill for the last 3 months was an average use of 260l per day for a family of 2 adults and 2 kids. At this rate, you would expect a fairly low water bill. Don’t kid yourself!
The bill was around $125. Still doesn’t sound like much for 3 months usage, but here’s the interesting part. The charge for the actual water used is only $18! And this is what s#1ts me! We are paying $107 in bloody local council and government charges! What’s the point of saving the water? $60 was for the local Parks and Gardens levy! I have my own garden to look after, never mind your bloody gardens! Install your own water tanks and use that. Don’t charge me for something I don’t use!
Sorry, don’t rant much, but what’s the point of doing your bit if the government doesn’t do their bit too.

No we have a big garden and a pool, our bill is pretty high. But back in the drought of 2004-5, we got our water bill down to R9 a month.
It was a good lesson on what you can do if you put your mind to it.
