We arrived in Munich at 1am on Friday morning. Flight was delayed and then we spent an hour on the (awesome) metro system before tramping around in the dark for 40 minutes trying to find our accomodation.
Our wake-up call came at 7am on Friday morning! “Achtung, achtung!” Some German gibberish and then again “Achtung, achtung! Can all groups please come down to reception. Your coach is waiting!” Sometimes I wonder if maybe I am too old for the hostel thing! Anyway, we managed to get back to sleep for another two hours before the Achtungs hit again.
So we headed off to Goetheplatz and Munich’s Beerfest! As it was only 11am when we got there, we first went on the rides. I don’t remember the last time I had so much fun on a roller-coaster! I thought I was gonna spew, but it was great! By 1pm, we had our first stein in front of us.
Now this is where it gets interesting. I had 2 friends with me, supposedly drinking buddies. NOT! The first one fell off the wagon after 2 steins. The second made three. And that left me with my stein and a table full of English lads on their bachelors party! They were already very messy and downing steins as if they were shots!
Needless to say, Saturday was a very quiet day for ALL of us. I managed another 4 steins in 12 hours, but the ‘boys’ avoided the stuff like the plague! We did, however, sample the local cuisine – bratwurst, haxe (pork knuckle), sauerkraut, schnitzel and some amazing pastries!
Sunday morning was spent in a coffee shop before the long trek back home.
PS: Don’t stay at the Thalkirche Youth Hostel in Munich! Noisy and dirty! Even found a used (pink!) condom under the bed! (photo proof available on request!)
