Saturday signalled the end of our regular rugby season and unfortunately, it ended with a loss. Our opposition was Eltham but we ended up playing a combined Eltham-Endeavour Hills-Melbourne Uni side as they were short for numbers. It was also meant to be our home game, but due to the amount of rain this week the VRU had closed our ground for being too muddy and we had to travel to Moorabbin instead.
Playing at Moorabbin is like playing on the beach. The ground is very sandy and soft with holes everywhere! It is extremely tiring to play on.
We kicked off and straight away were on the defense! The attack came in waves and the opposition moved the ball around continuously. And very well. We were soon drained of energy. By half time we were 19-0 down.
The second half was much better. From the kick-off, we seemed to have that little bit of extra spark. Our half time pep talk from Ed, Linz-eye and Axe had made a difference! We hit back with a beautiful rolling maul down the right wing with the ball finally coming out to the backs and Boris scoring under the posts. At the next kick off Eltham tried to catch us off guard by not kicking to their forwards. Unfortunately for them, the ball ended up in the winger’s hands. He set off down the touchline, jinxed left, side-stepped right and eventually scored after running about 40m.
We scored one more converted try, but it was not enough as Eltham managed to run in one more try. Final score 24-17.
On the bright side, we were handed the President’s Award for the best team in the competition. This is awarded not only to the top side in the comp, but also to the team who plays the game in the spirit it is meant to be played. Well done to all!
