Top place to live

Damn work has been keeping me away from the blogging stuff…
.
Anyway, I just discovered an interesting poll run by HSBC bank of the top places in the world for expats to live in. Canada came in first, Australia second and Thailand third. But, the surprise (not for some) is South Africa sneaking in at number six. I guess when you’re a British Expat and the exchange rate is somewhere between R10 and R17 to the British Pound, then life is good in the good ole RS of A!

I saw an article about it in the MX (very highbrow reading).

Not having been to Canada I can’t comment on that but having lived in RSA, Australia and the UK and having visisted Thailand I would have to say that SA deserves to be very close to the top of that list!!

My parents came to SA in 1971, planning on staying for 2 years and then returning to UK. They are still here and have NO intention of leaving.

@Liz: Wouldn’t expect anything less from The Lizard!
@Pamela: Funny… I went to the UK in 1993 to go backpacking, and never moved back to South Africa!

I was pretty close to doing that too. I went to the UK in 1994 and only returned to SA 6 years later…. I was also VERY close to staying in Australia. Just short of a year in Oz I walked into a travel agents and said “Put me on the next plane out of here!!” She asked why, did I not like the country. I had to say that I loved it and I knew that if I did not leave within the next week I would never go. I also vowed that I would never go back to Australia on holiday. If I came back it would be for good.
