Agoraphobia*

Saturday was my last game of the season. I was playing outside centre. I had a few good runs, made some hard tackles but didn’t get much ball. The forwards were playing the game up front and very successfully too. At half time we were 12 – 0 up.

With about 20 minutes left to go in the match, the wing asks if he can swap positions with me. (He has only had 2 touches of the ball!) No problem. So, for the next 20 minutes, I don’t get the ball. Quins score an unconverted try, Chic kicks a drop goal and it’s 15-5 to us.

Two minutes from time, our forwards steal the ball. It comes down the line, 5 of us versus 4 of them on an overlap. The ball comes quickly to me on the wing – pass, pass, pass, pass. I get it and take off. I see the cover defence out of the corner of my eye. I accelerate, running around him. I cross the halfway line. Only their fullback to beat. I hand him off no problem. 40m, 30m, 20m… me and the white line, no defence. 15m, 10m…

Poptwangggg! The hamstring goes! I try to push through the pain! 9 metres, 8 metres. They’re gaining! I…can’t…go…any…more. I go down! 5metres from the line. Couldn’t even get the grubber in! The ref blows the final whistle and my season is finished!

Ag, shame. Brilliant reporting though – makes it sound like you have pace and energy for a whole 79.5 minutes. What I don’t get is why your momentum (having run 50+ metres already) didn’t carry you just that bit further. 😉

As a lock forward I never had the chance to run so fast that my hamstring snapped, but I can imagine it must hurt like hell. Hope you recover soon. 🙂

@Bosbefok: The beers are in the fridge awaiting your arrival!
@6k: The field was too muddy! I went down and just got stuck in the gloop!
@SAExpats: You trying to say Bakkies or Big Vic can’t run? 😉
@Terri: The Boks don’t need me and I wouldn’t play for the Aussies if they begged! 🙂
