The Garage Bar

So, it’s finally happening. Ever since we moved into our new place in December ’07, I’ve been planning a bar for the garage. It’s a double garage and we only have one car. Because we weren’t using the other side, it has gradually filled up with clutter (as garages, sheds and spare rooms do!)

I started by converting an old PC into a jukebox. It’s REALLY old – runs Win98, has 256Mb of memory and a 20Gb hard drive. I then acquired a bar fridge which immediately filled with beer. Then we needed the actual bar.

I’ve been working on a few designs over the past few weeks which I then presented to my bro-in-law who is a cabinet maker. He looked at them and we discussed some issues last Tuesday. On Wednesday he rang me up and told me to come round to his factory on Saturday morning to build the design that he had perfected from my ideas. Sweeeeet!

When I arrived at the factory on Saturday morning, it was 95% finished. He hadn’t had much to do on Friday, so he got his apprentice to cut the bits and pieces to size and he knocked them together in the afternoon. All we had to do was transport it to my garage, place it where we wanted it and fix the bar top in place!

It was all done within 15 minutes. I have now started accessorizing it with various bar bits acquired during my time as a publican in London – beer mats, glassware, lights, openers, etc, etc. There is still quite a bit of clutter to clear out, but it is slowly taking shape.

This could be the first drive-in bar in the neighbourhood.

That’s really nice. I especially love the blow up roo as a mascot.

@Goblin: I think it should become a permanent fixture, but my wife doesn’t agree (she’s an Aussie!)

I thought my garage was bad! It looks worse than when I was there.
I’m definitely going to have to come and rest my elbow on that bar.

@Dad: Wait till it’s finished, then come over for a glass/bottle of red!
