It was about 7pm. I was lying on my bed, listening to ColdPlay when I heard four small bangs – almost like a firecracker going off! Being South African, I recognised the sound of a firearm straight away. I jumped up and ran to the window.
On the road, two floors down and one building to the right, a masked man was lifting up his motorcycle. Two men were running down the road, away from the white van whose side windows were shattered. The motorcyclist jumped on the bike, gunned the engine and took off.
The driver of the van came running back, jumped in the van and chased after him! By this time, I was on the phone to ‘999’ and gave them the registration of the van which I could clearly see.
I went downstairs to get a closer look. The pub was packed with other ‘curiosi’ trying to see outside. The cops came – loads of them. They cordoned off the whole street with cars and blue police tape. Statements were taken.
Apparently it was the local gangsters – Moroccans and Irish Gypsies; a drug deal gone wrong? A hit? Who knows. Another rumour is that one of the men in the van was hit in the shoulder.
We’ll wait for the story in the newspapers.
It’s now 11.45pm and the cops are still out there taking photos and measurements. And it’s -1 degree C. Brrrrrrrr!
