No, I’m not kidding, we had a shooting in the street outside last night…
It was about 7pm. I was lying on my bed, listening to ColdPlay when I heard four small bangs – almost like a firecracker going off! Being South African, I recognised the sound of a firearm straight away. I jumped up and ran to the window.
On the road, two floors down and one building to the right, a masked man was lifting up his motorcycle. Two men were running down the road, away from the white van whose side windows were shattered. The motorcyclist jumped on the bike, gunned the engine and took off.
The driver of the van came running back, jumped in the van and chased after him! By this time, I was on the phone to ‘999’ and gave them the registration of the van which I could clearly see.
I went downstairs to get a closer look. The pub was packed with other ‘curiosi’ trying to see outside. The cops came – loads of them. They cordoned off the whole street with cars and blue police tape. Statements were taken.
Apparently it was the local gangsters – Moroccans and Irish Gypsies; a drug deal gone wrong? A hit? Who knows. Another rumour is that one of the men in the van was hit in the shoulder.
We’ll wait for the story in the newspapers.
It’s now 11.45pm and the cops are still out there taking photos and measurements. And it’s -1 degree C. Brrrrrrrr!

Keep us updated.
I revisited London last year and happened upon a double murder one street over from our B&B.
For some reason I have the theme music to The Bill in my head.

A nice peaceful evening at home, huh?
It’s enough to make want you move back to South Africa to get away from the crime.

I suppose that’s the major differences between there and here. Whenever I hear gunfire, I duck down and stay the hell away from the window.

You could see them and you didnt even let fly with a bottle or two from your window ? Whats wrong with you ? Doesnt it amaze you how many shootings occur in countries that dont allow firearms ? Here the cops dont even carry guns, they are outlawed completely and yet there are shootings daily. The poor cops get shot at and all they can do is wave their little battons at the gangsters. They even passed a law that the Cops here cant use batons longer than 1 foot !! next they will use fur lined handcuffs ( they ain borrowing mine ….OOPs !)
