I watched ‘Long way round‘ again last night! And I was soooo jealous! How awesome would it be to ride a BMW motorcycle around the world in just over 3 months. (I know YOU’D love it Cuz!)
I’ve also read the book and it’s even better than the DVD/TV series. The book is so much more emotional. Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman (the actors who did the trip) show so much more raw emotion when they tell their own story. In some parts of the book, you actually feel their pain as they miss their families and try to overcome the challenges facing them. I’m not saying the DVD is no good. It’s amazing to put pictures to what you’ve read in the book. Some of the landscapes are stunning!
I would absolutely love to do somemthing like that. Maybe not around the world, across Europe maybe. Or how about through Africa to Cape Town? Or across Australia? I don’t quite earn as much as Ewan or Charlie so I don’t think I could afford to take 15 weeks off work. Another problem would be that I don’t actually own a motorcycle – through no choice of my own; my girlfriend doesn’t like them!
Obviously it would take loads of preparation and planning. Ewan and Charlie never had to worry about anything – they had sponsors (they even got their bikes for free!), a TV crew and a project manager and team to run everything! They also had two 4×4 support vehicles that followed about one day behind them.
A friend and I have thought about riding through Spain. He’s a mechanic and loves cars and bikes and would probably be the perfect riding partner. But now I’ve travelled Spain already, so we’ll have to find some other destination.
Who knows, sometimes dreams do come true.

What? Your girlfriend doesn’t like the idea of something hard and powerful throbbing between her legs? I can’t believe it. It’s just about the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

You’re right – I’d love it. Although I think they chose a bit of a rough path… I’d prefer a more civilised route. I’ve been watching the series on TV too & I have a lot of admiration for Ewan & Charlie.
If you’re serious, Del, we’re planning on doing Europe by bike sometime, maybe when we’ve finished our stint in Ireland. We have the bike now and everything! I’ll keep u in mind… so start working on the GF now..!
