We finally got out on Saturday to go caching with the kids. We chose the cache CHs Wetland Walk (GC10WRJ) because we felt like walking. TWO HOURS LATER…
After spending the morning in the garden, we arrived in Croydon Hills and set off on our hike around 11am. Immediately we ran into trouble – the first waypoint put us in the middle of a small lake! I searched around for about 20 minutes but to no avail!
We decided to do the walk anyway and see if we could find enough clues along the way to find the final cache anyway. The previous cacher had seemed to manage without the initial waypoint according to his log, so we set off.
At waypoint 2, the cache was quickly discovered and logged. Josh did the swaps as he had spotted a toy that he wanted.
At this point we left the park and walked about 1km along the side of the road. Although it is a very beautiful area, I wouldn’t recommend the walk with small kids. No pavement/side walk area where you can safely walk.
Waypoint 3 was back in the bush. It was near a small park where we took a short break and Josh played in the playground with some other boys. Again, this was quite an easy find and quickly logged before starting the 1km walk to the next waypoint.
Waypoint 4 was a different story! It was in a pretty park on the edge of a small lake. Lots of birds about, but no cache. I searched all over, but to no avail. After 15 minutes I gave up, but walking back to my family sitting in the shade I noticed a hollow tree. I looked inside (as any inquisitive geocacher would do) and voila! There it was. 15m away from the given coordinates!
We quickly logged this one and wrote down the final clues to the last waypoint and set off again. At the final GZ my family sat down for a picnic while I hunted for the cache. After 10 minutes, my 2 year old and I found it. He picked himself a little car and we dropped in another toy before signing the log.
All in all it was a good 5km morning hike followed by a nice picnic in a beautiful surrounding.
