I'm not a very politically outspoken person, but this is something that I feel quite strongly about. The environment. If we don't take care of our Earth, we're all doomed. Or our kids are.
We (our household) try really hard. We have a recycle bin, as do most Australians, for paper, plastic and metal. We have a compost heap for organics. We have a 2500l rainwater tank (we are on water restrictions in Melbourne) which feeds back into the toilet flush system and garden taps. We also use solar power to heat our water. But what else could we do? I could cycle to work, but I live almost 40km from the CBD so I don't see that happening. I do catch the bus to the station in the morning and then the train to the city and back every evening. The issue with this is that the public transport in Melbourne is at breaking point. Gridlock in the CBD is very common. Cancelled and delayed trains are even more common. Plans to fix the transport system are being discussed but will take 10 - 15 years to implement by which time it won't be enough. Their are 1500 people a week moving to Melbourne! Enough complaining. This post actually started out talking about Earth Day 2008 which is on April 22, so how about you do something different too. Maybe recycle your newspaper or re-use your bath water on the garden (like we do!)
