SuperRugby: Rebels vs Waratahs

AAMI Park

Last night I headed into the city to watch the Rebels’ first rugby game in the SuperRugby tournament. The trains were full of people as there were also 3 Aussie Rules games on.

We arrived at the stadium. The excitement was everywhere; finally Melbourne had a rugby team that would compete on the world stage. Passing through the gates, I got my 300mm zoom lens taken off me. Not happy!

We grabbed some (expensive) food and headed for our seats just in time to catch the end of the warm-up game. The Rebels 2nd team beat the Barbarians 34-26. We watched the opening ceremony of some washed up old Aussie folk singer, a little drummer boy and a marching band and choir. Not very inspiring stuff!

The came the kick-off. The Rebels dominated the first 20 minutes of the game with the Tahs not even making it into the Rebels’ half. But it was all downhill from there. The Tahs scored first. Actually, they scored all the points in a one-sided game that was extremely boring to watch. I’m not sure which side played worse! The game was riddled with handling errors and lack of initiative. The ref was far too strict, blowing the whistle continuously. There were 3 yellow cards.

Best players for the Rebels were by far Stirlo, Delve and some moments of genius from Vuna. The other players were petty pedestrian.

The crowd of 25,524 were more interested in the Mexican wave than the rugby by the end of the 80 minutes.
