Having reached the middle of our season, I thought I’d post an update of how our Vets rugby team is going.
So far we have played a total of 9 games – 1 warm up friendly and 8 league games. We have won a total of 7 of these. Unfortunately we lost our trophy game against Harlequins last weekend (22-17), but that was mainly down to the ref and his very bad decisions. This included awarding a try after the player clearly dropped the ball. The ref’s reaction: “He deserved the try”. Our other loss came against Southern Pirates at our home game (which I’ve blogged about previously here).
Our biggest win was yesterday against Eltham. The final score was 52-5 and the ref cut the game short by almost ten minutes to save the opposition some face. This is the same team that we played in our pre-season warm up match. We beat them 49-12 in that game. We also managed a big score against our arch nemesis side, Moorabin, winning 38-24 and against Endeavour Hills (38-14).
We’ve lost two players to knee injuries and one to a broken fibula.
On a more personal note, I am still uninjured this season despite copping a punch in the face and a knee in the head last weekend. I have played 8 matches so far (missed one for Joshua’s birthday party) and have scored 3 tries. I also managed to walk away with the “Muppet of the Week Award” for scoring a great solo try against Box Hill’s Unquenchables, sprinting 65m down the left wing and scoring under the posts.
Let’s hope that the rest of the season is just as good as this. Also, in September we are heading to Sydney to play in the World Masters Games for rugby. But more about that in the future.
